Project “Open Communities – Successful Communities” UNDP – in cooperation with World Health Organization, International Organization for Migration and UNDP

Project “Open Communities – Successful Communities”, financed by EU in total amount of EUR 4,000,000 is implemented by the consortium of the UN agency headed by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in cooperation with World Health Organization (WHO), International Organization for Migration (IOM) and United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).


Project partners are:

  • Ministry of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs,
  • Ministry of Health,
  • Ministry of European Integration,
  • Commissariat for Refugees and Migration.

The objective of the Project is to encourage acceptance and understanding of issues of migrants / refugees in local communities. The project will foster the relationship between host population and migrants / refugees, and improve communal infrastructure and the health care system.


The Project will be implemented between June 2017 and June 2019.


The Project has 3 components:

  1. Support for health care system – procurement of equipment for health care centres, procurement of ambulance vehicles, procurement of equipment for public health institutes, lab equipment, creation of guides for mental health and provision of psycho-social support.
  2. Support for local communities – means support for local communities through: strengthening of local infrastructure, employment of additional staff locally in institutions which need support, procurement of equipment or machines for local service providers (centres for social work, public utility companies, kindergartens, etc.).
  3. Social cohesion – support for institutions on the field, primarily representatives of the Commissariat and centres for social work, through cultural orientation, especially regarding preparation and realisation of direct activities with refugees.


Project activities were implemented in the following municipalities affected by migrant crisis: Dimitrovgrad, Preševo, Šid, Subotica, Bosilegrad, Belgrade, Sjenica, Tutin, Lajkovac, Loznica, Bujanovac, Pirot, Kanjiža, Sombor, Kikinda, Bela Crkva, Obrenovac and Vranje.
