Mr. Rasim Ljajić, Minister in the Government of the Republic of Serbia, has made a statement today that proposed amendments to the Law on Labour are supposed to protect employees and keep jobs, while the employers are enabled to reduce expenses in the conditions of reduced scope of work. In his statement to the press in the Assembly of Serbia, Mr. Ljajić said that according to trade unions’ data from the year 2000. till now 300,000 workers lost their jobs, while now in relation to December 2000., additional 40,000 people are unemployed and taken on the average, approximately 2,500 employees get dismissed every month. He has explained that these are approximate data and that the Government take different measures in trying to reduce dismissals from work based on technological surplus or consequences of economic crisis. Minister has pointed at the fact that Bill on Ammendments to the Law on Labour, which is to be discussed by the members of the parliament today, anticipates extension of a paid leave by consent of competent minister. According to his words, by current laws, employer was allowed to send employee to a paid leave for the period of 45 days during a calendar year, while longer periods are now allowed. He stated that in this case the employer shall be liable to pay compensation to the employee to the amount of 60% of earnings made in the last three months, while this amount should not be less than minimal wage amount set by the law. This is only one measure which shall not solve all problems we have in our economy, or the problem of employees’ dismissals from work, but this law shall certainly contribute to keeping a current employment level in a number of companies, Mr. Ljajić has pointed out and added that a proposed measure has a temporary character and it is related to the crisis period. |
